Therefore, a great way to move from drawing everyday items to something more creative is to draw something in-between. For instance, practice making outrageous shapes with the coffee mug you drew. Make it a triangular shape or a leaf out of the handle.

Another idea is to create unique patterns, such as curlicues, within every day shapes such as a your hand.

Abstract art drawing ideas start with being fearless. The best abstract art is not planned but rather comes out of thin air, from mistakes, from a practice run or from the remains of a drawing gone awry.

Take Picasso. He didn’t plan where every swirl or drip of paint went, he threw the paint over large canvases with abandon. He and his wife then went back over the dried work with frames to find the areas that “worked” the best.

In sum, abstract art comes from the combination of unexpected marks, colors, and/or textures. Therefore, keep playing with these in your sketch book, then go back to see what gems are hidden among them.
