4. Tips for drawing people
Here are the basic tips you’ll need to keep in mind when drawing people:
Drawing starts with looking
The fact is, you need to look at objects a lot in order to draw them. If you want to draw a person, then look at the person. If there is no live person, study photos. Really study him/her, understand what you’re looking at, then attempt to draw it.
Don’t worry if you don’t get it right the first time, drawing is like writing, you’ll have many drafts before your drawing is complete.
Look For Basic Shapes
Everything in the world can be simplified into basic shapes. When you are studying your subject, pick out the basic shapes that make up the overall part you’re attempting to draw.
For instance, a head is the shape of an ice cream cone, a circle (the skill) on a triangle (the jaw and chin). This will make drawing so much easier for you!
Use a Full Range of Value
Value = the darkness or lightness of a color. Make sure that your drawing has a full range of darks and lights and all the grays in between. This will add realism and interest to your drawings.
You define the light source and shadows through your use of value. Where the light is striking will be lightest, the other side will be the shadows so it should be the darkest. You should have grays in between.
A you always use a full range of value, your drawings of people will have volume and definition.
Use Line Quality
Line quality means the thickness or thinness of a line. If your drawing people, and it’s a line drawing, you will need to consider line quality. Like value, if you have a full range of line quality, your people drawings will draw much more interest.
Draw your lines thicker in some areas and thinner in other areas. For example if you’re trying to depict soft fur you may portray this with thinner lighter lines. If you’re depicting tension, such as stretched fabric, you may portray this with thicker lines.
Line quality adds interest as well as variety to your drawings.
Loosen Up
If you look at your favorite drawings, you’ll see that they are not stiff, exact or perfect.
For example, when you are trying to define the shape of an object, draw several light lines. You have a better chance of “finding” the right line when you draw several of them.
Try holding the pencil differently than how you hold it when you write. Draw with your shoulder instead of your wrist by moving your whole arm when you make a mark. In fact, these are exercises all of us artists do before we start working on drawing people.
You might want to write down these tips for drawing people and keep them nearby while you’re drawing until you’ve memorized them.

Lastly, let’s talk about how to master drawing many people – here’s how to draw a crowd easy:
The first thing you need to do is to give importance to the foreground. So if it’s a street scene you may want to emphasize a public speaker, if it’s a restaurant you may want to emphasize one table or if it’s a concert you might want to emphasize the stage.
Then you need to layer by adding a middle row. The area just next to the foreground you emphasized is the middle and the people have about 30% less detail than the foreground. This allows the person to focus on the foreground.
Finally, you need to sketch the back of the crowd. For this you might have to use a thinner pencil and lighter strokes. The individual figures in the back are much smaller than the foreground or middle ground characters. They have about 75% less detail.
You can see that varying the detail is an easy trick to master when learning how to draw a crowd.
